UFC 94: Penn v. St. Pierre 2…The Results

I was more excited about this fight than I have been for many others in the past. The hype machine was churning hard and I was really hoping BJ Penn would pull one out. Man was I dead wrong. GSP took him to the ground in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds with 3+ minutes left in the round each time. GSP delivered some of the most brutal ground and pound I had seen in a while, just man-handling the Hawaiian. Penn absorbed the punishment but it happened to be too much. The doctor ended the fight after the 4th round and GSP came away with a clear victory, unlike his split decision win from 2003. GSP will draw Thiago Alves for his next welterweight championship title defense.

The most entertaining fight of the night was Lyoto Machida v. Thiago Silva, both 13-0, and both hungry to stay that way. The two light heavyweights squared off and Machida showed why he was the better fighter. Machida floored Silva multiple times in the first round before landing a devastating shot that ended the match with only 1 second left in the 1st round. The victory places Machida near the top of the talent-laden light heavyweight division. Asked who he wanted to fight next, Machida turned to the crowd and said, “People, do I deserve a title shot?” The crowd responded with cheering approval.

My Rochester, NY boy, Jon Jones, won his match by unanimous decision over Stephan Bonner to remain undefeated and move to 8-0. Jones, the former JUCO wrestling national champion is a great wrestler with impressive hip control and take down ability. He landed some massive knee and elbow strikes on Bonnar, but Stephan took the punishment and kept it moving. It is good to see a local making waves in the UFC.
In the other undercard fights, Karo Parisyan earned a split decision victory over Dong Hyun Kim; and Clay Guida defeated Nate Diaz by split decision.
