For the record, this was my first ever PPV ordered for the MMA. I thought the card and the matchups were that good, plus, it was the holidays and what better reason to get people together during this time of year.

Griffin_Evans

Let’s talk about the big 3 fights first. In the main event, Forrest Griffin was defending his title for the first time against “Sugar” Rashad Evans. Evans was 17-0-1 entering the match and Griffin was determined to hand him his first loss. Things don’t always go as planned. Evans landed a solid punch on Griffin that took him to the ground. Griffin was rocked but managed to wrap up Evans in guard. They grappled for a minute or two and then BAM, Evans lands a solid right on the jaw of Griffin on the ground. Then came the hammer-fists and elbows. The ref stopped the fight, declaring Evans the new Light-Heavyweight Champ.

Nogueira_Mir

The co-main event sported the Interim Heavyweight Belt (Brock Lesnar owns the other half) between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir. Nogueira (pronounced No-Gerra) was looking to defend the title and get a shot at Lesnar in 2009, where the Heavyweight belts will be unified for an undisputed champion. Frank Mir fought the best fight of his life, picking apart Nogueira with his stand-up boxing. Mir knocked Nogueira down three times in the first round with solid punches but Nogueira bounced back and didn’t quit. The 2nd round went the same way but Mir landed a solid punch to Nogueira’s chin which sent him reeling to the ground. Mir jumped on and capitalized. The ref stopped the fight and Mir walked away with the belt. This is setting up a great rematch between Lesnar and Mir for the undisputed Heavyweight Champion in 2009.

Jackson_Silva

The third main fight of the night was Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva. This is the third time these two faced off, the previous two were in Pride fighting and Silva won them both. Rampage came out and with 2 minutes left in the first round, landed a fierce left hook on Silva which sent him to the ground. Silva was out cold laying on the canvas. Jackson lost his Light Heavyweight title to Griffin in his last fight but he is showing that he is focused on fighting again and has put all the out of ring distractions behind him. I look forward to the Evans vs. Jackson matchup that 2009 is sure to bring.
